Welcome to Explore with Sailer – your insider guide to the most beautiful places, active adventures, and local secrets around Innsbruck. I’m your host, and today we’re taking you on a very special ride – not by car, not on foot, but by tram.

Today’s episode: The Waldbahn Experience – Innsbruck’s Line 6.

Did you know that one of the most scenic tram journeys in the Alps starts right here in Innsbruck? Line 6, lovingly called the Waldbahn – or “forest railway” – is not just public transport. It’s a true experience. This charming tram line connects city life with nature, rolling gently from the hustle and bustle of downtown Innsbruck into the serene forests and quaint alpine villages, all the way to Igls. And yes, it’s as beautiful as it sounds.

Transcript for the Waldbahn Experience – Innsbruck’s Line 6

Our journey begins at Claudiaplatz

Just minutes into the ride, you’ll pass the legendary Bergisel – home to the Olympic ski jump and the Tirol Panorama Museum. From there, the tram winds past Ambras Castle, a true gem of Renaissance architecture, with lush gardens and fascinating collections of armor and art.
But as the name “Waldbahn” suggests, soon you’ll find yourself surrounded by trees. Thick forest, green meadows, grazing cows, and fresh mountain air – this is where the urban fades, and alpine nature takes over.

Looking for an active day out?

This route is packed with outdoor possibilities. There are countless walking and running trails through the woods and across open fields. Curious travelers will also find mystical tree circles, hidden caves, and even protected moorlands – perfect for quiet reflection or a bit of nature photography.
And the final stop? The picturesque village of Igls. Known for its Olympic history and warm Tyrolean hospitality, Igls invites you to slow down. Enjoy a coffee and homemade cake at the cozy café Platzl, and breathe in the alpine charm.

Line 6 has been running since around 1900

Today, it’s updated with modern comforts, but the ride itself remains delightfully slow and scenic. It’s not just about getting from A to B – it’s about enjoying the journey.
Locals cherish it. Visitors fall in love with it. And if you ask me, it’s one of the best ways to explore the natural beauty surrounding Innsbruck.

The Waldbahn runs regularly and connects easily with Innsbruck’s public transport system. For the current timetable, just check out the IVB website – search for “Line 6 Waldbahn”.
So, whether you’re a nature lover, a history fan, or just in need of a peaceful escape – hop on Line 6 and let the forest take you away.
