Innsbruck's sights

Monuments, museums, churches and more in Tyrol's regional capital

From historical buildings to priceless art objects to witnesses from its cultural and regional history: there are so many treasures just lying in wait to be discovered in Innsbruck. Plan your holiday in Innsbruck with the following highlights well worth seeing.

Many walkers look at the Golden Roof in Innsbruck, under a cloudless sky.
Innsbruck's landmark: the Golden 'Dachl' - Golden Roof

Goldenes Dachl

Innsbruck's most famous roof is located highly visibly right at the end of the Herzog-Friedrich-Straße pedestrian area. The oriel was built by order of Maximilian I and decorated with no less than 2,657 fire gilded copper tiles. Today you can trace Emperor Maximilian I's impressive life in the museum set up there.

Court Church

The Court Church situated next to Hofburg Palace became famous as Maximilian I's tomb. Its second name "Schwarz Mander Kirche" (Black Men's Church) came from the statue of the kneeling emperor and the 28 larger than life figures of his ancestors, who are grouped around him.

City tower

The City tower at the Old city hall is another Innsbruck landmark that towers 15 m high up into the sky. Built between 1442 and 1450, it provides the most wonderful experience from the viewing platform today, which can be reached by climbing 148 steps.

Innsbruck Cathedral

In the north west of Innsbruck's Hofburg Palace the magnificent façade of the Cathedral of St. James with its two towers rises up on the Domplatz. Built between 1717 and 1724, Innsbruck Cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful works of late Baroque church architecture.

A ballroom with a ceiling painting and many paintings on the walls, many large chandeliers illuminate the ballroom.
The Imperial Hofburg - a fairytale place

Wilten Abbey Basilica

The Wilten Abbey Basilica impresses from outside due to its baroque façade and from inside due to its magnificent decoration. Subtle colours, festive gold and delicate Rococo stucco produce an enchanting work of art.

Hofburg Palace and Hofgarten

The imperial Hofburg Palace in Innsbruck was developed from a Medieval fortification into the seat of the Tyrolean Prince Regents. Today the staterooms, which are really worth seeing, exude the glamour of the past. Frescoes, hundreds of exhibits from court society life, themed rooms and a gallery with portraits of the Tyrolean Prince Regents and famous Habsburg family members are just a few of the highlights inside the Hofburg Palace. In addition, the Hofburg Palace is also used as a venue for temporary exhibitions, special shows, theatre performances and for the Innsbruck promenade concerts in the summer.

It's not just worth taking a detour to the various Innsbruck museums on rainy days, there are so many to choose from:

  • Ferdinandeum Tyrolean State Museum: art and exhibits from the Stone Age to present day
  • The Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art houses the most significant collection of cultural treasures from Tyrol's past.
  • Arsenal Museum: museum for Tyrol's cultural history, from prehistoric finds to the World Wars
  • Grassmayr Bell Museum and Foundry: 400 years of craftsmanship
  • Tirol Panorama Museum with Kaiserjägermuseum: besides a 1,000 m2 360° panoramic painting Tyrol's military history can also be traced here.
  • Museum of Archaeology Innsbruck: Austria's second oldest archaeology university collection with more than 1,000 objects
