A Green Journey Around the World in the Heart of Innsbruck

The Botanical Garden Innsbruck-Hötting is one of the city’s most beautiful and peaceful natural spots. For more than 100 years, it has served not only as a teaching and research facility for the University of Innsbruck, but also as a popular place for walking, discovering and relaxing. Today, more than 7,000 plant species from a wide variety of habitats around the world grow across the approximately two-hectare garden.

Between alpine mountain plants, tropical rainforests, Mediterranean vegetation and fragrant herb gardens, visitors can experience a journey through different climate zones and continents. The tropical greenhouses with exotic plants, the Alpinum with rare mountain species and the sensory garden make the Botanical Garden Innsbruck a unique destination in Tyrol for nature lovers and plant enthusiasts.

From the Alps to the Tropics

One of the reasons why the Botanical Garden Innsbruck feels so fascinating is the diversity of its themed areas. Within just a few steps, the scenery changes completely: from the peaceful arboretum with old trees and fragrant herbs to tropical greenhouses with exotic climates.

The tropical and subtropical greenhouses are especially impressive. Surrounded by large leaves, orchids, cocoa and coffee plants, visitors almost feel as if they are walking through a rainforest. The gentle sound of water, the warm humid air and the intense scents create an atmosphere that few would expect to find in Innsbruck.

In contrast, the Alpinum presents plants from mountain regions all around the world. Rare alpine flowers, species from the Himalayas and plants from the Rocky Mountains grow among stones and winding paths – a tribute to Tyrol’s alpine nature.

Peaceful areas such as the sensory garden, the fern garden and the prairie garden also invite visitors to slow down and experience nature more consciously. Especially during spring and summer, the garden changes almost every week, making every visit feel a little different.
