Day trip to Innsbruck's local mountain: the Nordkette
An adventure in the summer and winter
For the locals it's long been part of life in Innsbruck to go to the Nordkette for a drink after work or at the weekend or for some active recreation. A recreational and play area for active people in the summer, a ski area with several highlights in the winter: the Nordkette with the Hungerburg district in front of it, the Seegrube and Hafelekar. Every season is an experience that is close enough to touch from the city. As a guest at Hotel Sailer you receive 5% discount off the funicular trip.
From the city up the mountain
The trip starts in the city centre, where the Hungerburg funicular's bottom station is situated. The funicular opened in 2007 impressively rises up out of its surrounding area like an architectural highlight. Both the stations and the cable-stayed bridge were designed by Zaha Hadid, whose plans and ideas already gave rise to the ski jump on the Bergisel.
From the top station the trip continues with the Seegruben panoramic gondola and the Hafelekar cable car. You leave the city behind you as you climb altitude metre by metre and find yourself surrounded by relaxing and tranquil nature. Looking back reveals a panoramic view over Innsbruck encircled by mountains.
In the winter
In the winter you mainly lark around in the ski area, which besides 15 kilometres of slopes also entices you with a freeride park, children's park, ski school & ski hire, winter hiking path and the legendary Cloud 9 igloo bar. The Hafelekar Gorge, which is one of the steepest ski runs in Europe with a drop of 70%, is reserved for pros.
In the summer
Summer up the Nordkette entices you with priceless views, relaxation and all kinds of activities. The 1,905 m high Seegrube is the meeting place for day trippers and sports enthusiasts, who hit the downhill trail or climbing area in a big way. The zip-wire is also great fun for both the young and old. There are also stunning hiking opportunities, for example to one of the mountain farms. Anyone who wants to go right to the top should take the next gondola from Seegrube up the Hafelekar, a breathtaking viewing point at 2,300 metres.
Another attractive day trip destination is situated between the Nordkette and the old town, Alpenzoo Innsbruck is right next to one of the Hungerbahn funicular's stops.
